The choice of scale moves the result more than any rounding decision ever will. A 75% transcript is a 2.0 under US letter bands and a 3.16 via CBSE — more than a full grade point apart, from the same student.
The one rule that overrides all of this: if your destination requires a formal credential evaluation, that evaluator's table is the only conversion that counts. Many US universities also recalculate GPA from your original transcript using their own internal method, which means your self-converted figure was never the operative number to begin with.
Find the right percentage to use
Use the cumulative or programme-level percentage from your official transcript, not an individual subject mark or a self-calculated average. If your transcript reports a CGPA instead, convert that to a percentage first.
Establish which scale your destination expects
This is the step people skip, and it changes the answer by up to a full grade point. A US university asks for the 4.0 scale. An Indian university asks for a percentage. A credential evaluator such as WES applies its own country-specific table. Ask before you convert.
Apply that scale's conversion
US letter bands map ranges to grade points — 90–100% to 4.0, 80–89% to 3.0, and so on. The linear formula divides by 100 and multiplies by 4. CBSE divides the percentage by 9.5 for a 10-point CGPA. Each produces a different number from the same input.
Check the result against a second scale
If two scales give answers more than about 0.3 apart, the choice of scale matters more than the precision of your arithmetic. The converter above shows all of them at once so you can see the spread.
Report it as an estimate, not a fact
Many US universities recalculate your GPA from your original transcript using their own method, and some require a formal evaluation. Submit your original percentage alongside any converted figure rather than replacing it.

Some institutions award 4.3 for an A+, which can produce an unweighted GPA above 4.0. Percentage cutoffs vary between schools — your registrar's published scale is the authoritative one for your transcript.
There is no single formula, which is why different converters give different answers. The three most common methods: the US letter-band table maps ranges to grade points (90–100% is 4.0, 80–89% is 3.0, 70–79% is 2.0); the linear formula is GPA = (percentage ÷ 100) × 4; and for Indian secondary records the CBSE formula is CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5, giving a 10-point figure that converts to the 4.0 scale by multiplying by 0.4. A 75% comes out as 2.0, 3.0 or 3.16 depending on which you use.
Whichever your destination institution specifies. If they don't specify, the US letter-band table is the safest default for American universities because it mirrors how US transcripts are graded in the first place. The linear formula is a quick approximation that tends to flatter mid-range percentages. If you are applying with an international transcript and the university requires a credential evaluation, the evaluator's table is the only one that counts and none of the others matter.
Under the US letter-band table, 75% is a C, which is 2.0 on the 4.0 scale. Under the linear formula it is 3.0. Under CBSE it is a 7.9 CGPA, which converts to roughly 3.16 on the 4.0 scale. The gap between 2.0 and 3.16 for the same transcript is the clearest illustration of why the scale matters more than the arithmetic.
CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5, and in reverse, percentage = CGPA × 9.5. The divisor is 9.5 rather than 10 because it represents the midpoint of the top grade band, so 95% converts to exactly 10.0. This is CBSE's published formula for Class 10 and 12 results. University-level CGPA on a 10-point scale often uses a different institutional formula, so check your university's own published method.
The commonly cited approximation is GPA = CGPA × 0.4, so an 8.5 CGPA is roughly 3.4. Equivalently, divide by 2.5. This is a rough proportional fit rather than an official mapping — credential evaluators use graded tables that account for how marks are actually distributed in the originating country, which usually produces a different and often higher figure for South Asian transcripts.
WES applies country-specific and institution-specific tables rather than a formula. For most South Asian universities, 60% is treated as equivalent to a US B, which is 3.0 on the 4.0 scale — considerably more generous than the linear formula, which would put 60% at 2.4. This reflects the reality that percentage grading in South Asia distributes marks very differently from US grading. The WES-style column here is an approximation of that pattern, not WES's actual table, which is not published in full.
Because they silently pick one scale and present it as the answer. A converter using the linear formula will give a higher figure for mid-range percentages than one using letter bands, and neither is wrong — they are answering different questions. Any converter that shows a single number without naming its scale is hiding the most important part of the conversion.
No. On the US letter-band scale, anything from 93% up is a 4.0, and under many schools' tables anything from 90% up qualifies. The 4.0 scale is a band system, not a proportional one, which is why converting a GPA back to a percentage produces a range rather than a single figure.
For US undergraduate admissions, 3.0 is roughly average, 3.5 is competitive at selective schools, and 3.7 and above is strong nearly anywhere. For graduate admissions most programmes set a floor around 3.0, with competitive applicants above 3.5. Bear in mind that a converted GPA is read alongside your original transcript, so a strong percentage in a rigorous system is not disadvantaged by a conservative conversion.
Report your original percentage or CGPA as it appears on your transcript, and give the converted figure only if the application asks for one — clearly labelled as a conversion with the method named. Fabricating precision on a self-converted number is a documented way to create problems at verification. If the university requires a credential evaluation, follow that process rather than submitting your own figure.
