Yes. ETS (the maker of TOEFL) publishes a concordance table comparing TOEFL iBT scores to IELTS Academic band scores. This is the most widely cited and accepted comparison. However, neither ETS nor British Council (IELTS) officially 'converts' scores — each test measures English proficiency independently. Institutions accept one or the other based on their own minimum requirements.
It depends on where you're applying. TOEFL iBT is preferred by most US universities and is accepted by over 11,000 institutions worldwide. IELTS Academic is more widely accepted in the UK, Australia, Canada, and Europe, and is required for UK visa applications. Both are accepted by most major universities globally. If you have a choice, consider which format suits you better: TOEFL is computer-based with an integrated speaking section; IELTS includes a face-to-face speaking interview.
Most US universities require IELTS Academic 6.5–7.0 overall for graduate admission. Top programs (Harvard, MIT, Stanford) typically require 7.0–7.5. Undergraduate programs are often 6.0–6.5. Some programs have section minimums (e.g. at least 6.0 in Writing) in addition to the overall band. Always check the specific program's requirements.
TOEFL iBT out of 120: most graduate programs require 80–100. Top research universities typically require 100+. Undergraduate programs often require 70–90. Teaching assistantship eligibility often requires 23–26 in the Speaking section specifically. Many universities list their minimum on their admissions pages.
The conversion is approximate — both tests measure similar skills but use different formats, scoring scales, and question types. A student might score differently on each test due to test format preferences, test day conditions, and preparation. Treat conversions as a rough guide, not an exact equivalence. If a university requires TOEFL specifically, take TOEFL; don't assume an IELTS score will be accepted at the 'equivalent' TOEFL score.
IELTS Academic is for undergraduate and postgraduate university admission and professional registration. IELTS General Training is for secondary education, work experience, and migration to English-speaking countries (especially Australia, Canada, UK). Universities almost always require IELTS Academic. This converter uses the Academic band scale.
