How this calculator works

Enter your bill amount and tap a tip percentage — 15%, 18%, 20%, 22%, or 25% — or type a custom value. The tip amount, total bill, and per-person split update instantly. The round up suggestion shows the nearest dollar amount that makes splitting clean and easy.

Tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill amount you enter. If your bill already includes tax and you want to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter the subtotal instead of the final amount.

Common questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, standard restaurant tipping etiquette: 15% for adequate service, 18–20% for good service, 22–25% for excellent service. For buffets, 10% is common since staff effort is lower. For takeout, 10–15% is appreciated but not required. Pre-tax vs post-tax: it's customary to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people tip on the total for simplicity.

How do I calculate a tip quickly in my head?

For 20%: move the decimal left one place to get 10%, then double it. Example: $47 bill → $4.70 (10%) → $9.40 (20%). For 15%: get 10%, then add half. Example: $47 → $4.70 + $2.35 = $7.05. For 18%: get 20% and subtract 10% of that. Example: $47 → $9.40 − $0.94 = $8.46.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Technically, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional etiquette — the server's service is for the food, not the government's tax. In practice, most Americans tip on the post-tax total for simplicity, and the difference is small (a few cents to a dollar on most bills). Both approaches are acceptable.

How much should I tip for food delivery?

For food delivery (DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub): $3–5 minimum for short distances, 15–20% for larger orders, 20–25% for bad weather or difficult deliveries. For pizza delivery, $3–5 is standard. Note: delivery fees charged by the app generally do not go to the driver — the tip is separate and goes directly to them.

How much should I tip at a hotel?

Hotel tipping guide: Bellhop/porter: $1–2 per bag ($5 minimum). Housekeeping: $3–5 per night, left daily (staff rotates). Concierge: $5–10 for significant help, nothing for simple directions. Room service: check if gratuity is already included on the bill (often 18–20% is added automatically). Valet parking: $2–5 when picking up your car.

What is tip splitting and how does this calculator handle it?

Bill splitting divides the total (bill + tip) equally among the number of people. This calculator shows the tip per person and total per person separately so you can see both. It also shows the total tip amount and total bill for the group. For unequal splits (someone ordered more), adjust the bill amount to each person's share before calculating.
