How this calculator works
The critical step is the pitch multiplier. A sloped roof covers more surface than the flat footprint beneath it, and the multiplier is the ratio between the two: √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12, with rise measured in inches per 12 inches of run.
For a 6/12 pitch that is √(36 + 144) ÷ 12 = 13.416 ÷ 12 = 1.118, meaning the roof surface is 11.8 percent larger than the footprint. At 12/12 the multiplier is 1.414 — a 41.4 percent increase.
Footprint × multiplier gives actual roof area. Waste is added, and the result is divided by 100 to give roofing squares, the unit the US trade quotes in. Bundles are squares × bundles-per-square, rounded up. Underlayment assumes standard 4-square rolls.
Worked example
A 50 ft × 30 ft house with a 6/12 gable roof, 10% waste, three-bundle architectural shingles at $120 per square:
Footprint: 50 × 30 = 1,500 sq ft
Pitch multiplier at 6/12: 1.118
Actual roof area: 1,500 × 1.118 = 1,677 sq ft
With 10% waste: 1,845 sq ft → 18.5 squares
Bundles: 18.5 × 3 = 56 bundles
Shingle cost: 18.5 × $120 = $2,220
Estimating from the 1,500 sq ft footprint alone would have you order 15 squares — nearly four squares short before waste is even considered.
What the number doesn't cover
Shingles are one line on a roofing invoice. A full job also needs underlayment, ice and water shield at the eaves and valleys (required by code across most of the northern US), drip edge, step and counter flashing at every wall intersection and chimney, ridge cap shingles, ridge vent, and roofing nails.
Then there is tear-off and disposal of the existing roof, which is a significant line item and often includes a dumpster rental, plus any sheathing repair found once the old roof is off — a cost nobody can quote until the deck is exposed. Labour typically runs two to three times the material cost on a residential re-roof.
Roofing is also one of the more dangerous DIY jobs on a house, and steep pitches materially increase that risk. Above 6/12, most homeowners are better served hiring the work out.

What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface, and it is the unit the entire US roofing trade quotes in — materials, labour, and estimates all come priced per square. A 2,000 square foot roof surface is 20 squares. Note that this is roof surface, not house footprint, which is why pitch has to be factored in before you convert.
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Three bundles cover one square for standard three-tab and most architectural shingles. Heavier premium and designer shingles sometimes take four or even five bundles per square, since the bundles are packed by weight rather than coverage. Check the coverage printed on the wrapper before ordering, especially for anything above standard architectural grade.
How does roof pitch affect the material I need?
Pitch is the reason roof area always exceeds house footprint. A roof rising 6 inches for every 12 inches of run has a slope length about 11.8 percent longer than the flat distance beneath it, so a 1,500 square foot footprint becomes about 1,677 square feet of actual roof. Steeper pitches widen that gap sharply — a 12/12 roof is 41.4 percent larger than its footprint.
How do I measure roof pitch from the ground?
The safest method is from inside the attic. Hold a level horizontally against a rafter, mark 12 inches along it, then measure straight down from that mark to the rafter — that vertical distance in inches is your rise over a 12-inch run. A 6-inch drop is a 6/12 pitch. Most US residential roofs fall between 4/12 and 9/12.
How much waste should I add for roofing?
Ten percent is standard for a simple gable roof with two straightforward planes. Go to 15 percent for hip roofs, which require cutting every course along the diagonal hips, and higher again for roofs with dormers, valleys, skylights, or multiple intersecting planes. Valleys in particular consume material fast, since every course meeting the valley needs an angled cut.
Does this calculator account for a complex roof?
It applies a pitch multiplier to a rectangular footprint, which is accurate for simple gable and hip roofs. For roofs with multiple sections at different pitches, dormers, or intersecting wings, measure each section separately and add the results. Complex roofs also warrant a higher waste factor than the same square footage on a simple one.
